The Second Respect the Aged Day - Complimentary Breakfast for All Octogenarians

The Second Respect the Aged Day - Complimentary Breakfast for All Octogenarians
Monday 2nd April 2012

The Second Respect the Aged Day
Monday 2nd April 2011 - All Day

Following the success of last year's inaugural event, Alf’s will once again be supporting Respect the Aged Day when we will offer local Octogenarians a complimentary breakfast at Alf’s. We will also have the company of our local MP, Sarah Wollaston in the morning.

Mike Cast is the organising force behind the Respect the Aged Day. Mike is a local author last year published the book ‘8000 Years of Wisdom’ which celebrates wise words from 100 80 year olds. The book is a living history seen through the eyes of those who have lived through fascinating social and historical events over the last 80 years.

The book reflects dramatic world changes as experienced by people from all walks of life. Some stories cover major events, such as the two world wars and the 1948 London Olympics, significant social developments, such as the advent of widespread car ownership and commercial air flights, opening up travel to the everyday person. On a more domestic level, memories include simple home remedies in widespread use before the arrival of the NHS, such as onion gruel, bread poultices, mustard baths, goose fat and brimstone and treacle.

The idea came from a conversation Mike had with his elderly parents on how they could share their life’s experiences with their grandchildren. Mike is a champion of the older generation and has mounted a campaign calling on the Prime Minister to get the UK to follow Japan’s lead by adopting a “respect for the Aged Day.”

Local MP Sarah Wollaston, who will be visiting us on the day has said “I am delighted to support the first ‘Respect the Aged Day’ and to add my thanks to all those who are contributing to this event. In Torbay we are fortunate to have such a wealth of experience and the voluntary sector could not manage without the dedicated service that older residents give to our communities”.

We are well on our way to making this an annual event, so come & support the second one & bring in all the Octogenarians you know....birth certificates not needed!!!

J/80 Sailing World Championships 2012

J/80 Sailing World Championships 2012
Saturday 9th June 2012 to Friday 15th June 2012

J/80 Sailing World Championships
Saturday 9th - Friday 15th June

The 2012 J/80 World Sailing Championships will be held in the stunning port of Dartmouth on the south west coast of the UK. In an unprecedented move, the Britannia Yacht Club has agreed to act as the Senior Hosting Club for the championship, working alongside the Royal Dart Yacht Club and the J/80 UK Class Association. The 2012 J/80 World Championship Opening Ceremony will be hosted by the historic Britannia Royal Naval College, as will the Prizegiving Dinner at the close of the regatta.

Seventy or more J/80 teams will arrive in the beautiful South Devon town of Dartmouth to compete at the 2012 J/80 World Championship. Entries are expected from the UK, France, Spain, Denmark, Germany, Holland, Sweden, Italy, Russia and the USA, ensuring a truly International, top-level sporting event. This small armada will comprise approximately three hundred and fifty competing athletes and a total of around five hundred visitors to the port. The sailing area for the championship will be in Start Bay, just outside the harbour entrance and so easily visible from the nearby beaches and cliff tops for the enjoyment of spectators.

The UK J/80 fleet recently enjoyed stunning sailing conditions in Dartmouth for their 2011 National Championship which took place in June this year and which was run by the same team from the Royal Dart Yacht Club which will be helping to deliver the Worlds next year. Start Bay offers everything competitors would expect and wish for: open water, big waves and tactically challenging tidal conditions. The prevailing conditions themselves will no doubt prove a real draw for the athletes in the J/80 fleet, but this coupled with the proven warmth and hospitality of the town of Dartmouth alongside the amazing opportunity to experience first-hand the magnificent grandeur and history of Britannia Royal Naval College will ensure that this is a J/80 World Championship quite unlike any other sailing regatta.

The website for the 2012 J/80 World Championships is live now at www.j80worlds2012.com and it contains a whole host of information which will be useful to J/80 Competitors.

South Devon Crab Festival
30th July - 5th August

Where else but in South Devon would you find a week-long festival dedicated to crabs and all things crabby? The South Devon Crab Festival is held all over South Devon at various locations and includes events, tasting, demonstrations, crabbing competitions and a range of beach events to enjoy.

Celebrating a West Country industry - There are many distinct events in South Devon that reflect its diverse and colourful identity, and of these the South Devon Crab Festival celebrates a traditional West Country industry with all the gusto and passion that we like to throw into all our festivities. From teaching people how to crab to tasting the excellent range of dishes involving crab, we love to celebrate our maritime bounty in style. The South Devon Crab Festival is putting this crustacean back on the culinary map.

Dartmouth is the perfect place to try your hand at crabbing - all you need is a bucket, a line and some bait!

Dartmouth Food Festival 2012

Dartmouth Food Festival 2012
Friday 26th October 2012 to Sunday 28th October 2012

The fabulous Dartmouth Food Festival

2011 was a phenomenally successful event....the crowds came out & everyone had a fab time.

Alf's held the Food Festival Quiz...think the top prize went to Kingswear (once again!) and we were also with Coast & Country Cottages in the Avenue Gardens all weekend keeping people refreshed (or awake!) with lots of good coffee & tempting cakes..........there was even a browie tower demonstration in there too!

Planning now going on for the 2012 event & for up to date info check out www.dartmouthfoodfestival.com

The Dartmouth Food Festival first took place in 2002 in Dartmouth's Market Square. There were only a handful of stalls but a huge amount of enthusiasm from local restaurants, hotels and producers. Over the last 9 years, it's developed into a major food event or as The Daily Telegraph put it (February 2011), a 'heady mix of celebrity chefs, parties, food markets, tasting shacks and demonstrations'.

We saw local heroes like Jane Baxter (Riverford Organics) and Holly Jones (Manna from Devon) cooking alongside wine experts Fiona Beckett (The Guardian) and award-winning Tim McLaughlin-Green from Sommeliers Choice.

Our real aim is to showcase the best that South Devon has to offer - from Riverford Farm Organics through to Well Hung meat and Bigbury Bay Oysters. We're also celebrating the quality of our award-winning restaurants (The Seahorse, Restaurant Angelique, Ode in Shaldon and the Millbrook Inn, South Pool to name but a few) and their amazing chefs. It's probably true to say that South Devon has the most award winning chefs per square foot than any other part of the country (or is that just us being biased?!).

We're also keen to promote the quality of our local hotels, B&Bs and self-catering cottages. If you haven't booked your stay yet, our advice is to check out availability now as this year's festival coincides with the start of Half-Term week in many places.

The Dartmouth Food Festival company is non-profit making - so everything you see at the Festival has been put together by a voluntary team. Not that we're banging our own drum but we just want you to know that anything you spend over the 3 days either supports local trade or boosts our fundraising efforts. If you'd like to get involved, don't be shy - e-mail us care of info@mannafromdevon.com
